Schoolyard Naturalization

Why Naturalize a Schoolyard?

Here's a list of reasons!

•  Looks Beautiful!
•  Provides teachers, children and the community an opportunity to learn about and experience our natural world without leaving the schoolyard!
•  Creates food for wildlife (many insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, arachnids, etc)
•  Creates habitat for wildlife (many insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, arachnids)
•  Creates biodiversity (this means that the garden will contain many different types of animal and plant life)
•  Does not need to be watered every day! (this means more water left for the rest of us)
•  Does not need a lot of weeding (this means less work for us!)
•  Does not need pesticides or fertilizers (this means less harmful chemicals in our environment!)

Why London Road School ?

Tucked away in central Sarnia , London Road School is looking to increase their presence in the community. The school is also hoping to create a more variable play and learning experience for their students. It is hoped that this garden will beautify the school grounds, enrich academic learning by providing hands-on learning opportunities and act as an education garden to the greater community!

What will the garden look like?

The garden will be approximately 40' by 30' and will incorporate 3 main areas; an outdoor classroom log ring, surrounded by a tall plant mix, and a short plant mix area just below and surrounding the London Road School sign!

When will the planting be done?

There are currently 3 planned Work Days!

Site Prep Day #1

Date: Thursday May 21st
Time : 6:00 PM
Goal : Installing 20 log stools to be used as seating in the outdoor classroom section of the garden!

Site Prep Day #2

Time : 6:00 PM
Goal : Preparing garden beds (removing sod and creating/mulching walkways)

Planting Day:

Date : Saturday May 23rd, 2009
Time : 9:00 AM – finished!
Goal : Planting entire garden, watering and mulching

Who will be helping?

Although the LWI Young Naturalist Group has been planning and organizing this event for months, we have already received help from a number of community members and organizations. But we do need help with the site preparation and planting days and hope the school community and the greater neighbourhood community will volunteer to help!

How can my family and I help?

Come out and help on the Site prep and Planting days! Get your hands dirty, enjoy some sunshine and take part in our exciting celebration!

OR…

Volunteer to join our maintenance team! This team, know as the ‘Return the Landscape' team will be helping to maintain schoolyard gardens throughout the city. This is a volunteer team that will also be involved in Plant Rescue from development sites to use in future schoolyards!!
